Item description:

Absolutely stunning signed Ilias Lalaounis 18 karat yellow gold pair of earrings / ear clips. Each earring resembles a finely detailed, hand engraved and chiseled group of intervening bamboo stems, both giving the impression of a tropical and summer jungle, as well as having a flame or burning fire like form. Each clip fastens perfectly to the ear to cover most of its lower part and gives the wearer a fairy tale or even elf like enchanting impression. The bamboo design strikingly resembles a later design used by the Cartier firm. Each earring measures 38 x 24mm (1.5” x 0.95”) and the pair has a gross weight of 23.3 grams of 18K yellow gold. Both clips are hallmarked for 18 karat gold, as well as signed Lalaounis. Most likely a 1970s or 1980s set. Absolutely scarce vintage jewelry collector pair and one of the rare Ilias Lalaounis earrings and jewels. The jewelry designs and jewels of Ilias Lalaounis could only be compared to the finest designs of well renowned jewelry firms like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Boucheron, Tiffany, etc. Ilias Lalaounis is the Athenian jewelry company known for its antiquity-inspired designs. In 1940, at age twenty, founder Ilias Lalaounis began his career by apprenticing at the prestigous Zolotas— the family business. Eventually Lalaounis started his own firm, specializing in fabricating chains. Later he began to produce ancient Greek revival jewelry. The enterprise was wildly successful. Business grew throughout the 1950’s. In the 1960’s, the firm became internationally recognized when Aristotle Onassis purchased Lalaounis jewels for his lover, Maria Callas, as well as for his (later) wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. In 1993, Lalaounis opened a museum in Athens featuring several thousand pieces of his work—with the aim of both displaying his creations and educating the public about the original design periods that inspired them.
