Item description:

Lovely signed piece by British firm of Kutchinsky, circa 1970. The brooch depicts a winking gold cat with large cabochon garnet belly, blue cabochon sapphire eye and ruby nose tip. The finely carved yellow gold brooch has the typical vintage 70ies design of winking cats and other animals as crafted by other major firms like Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb, etc. The cat brooch measures approximately 25 x 20mm and has a gross weight of 10.8 grams of 18 karat yellow gold. This fine piece of vintage jewelry carries all British hallmarks for 18K gold plus it is signed with the Kutchinsky’s maker’s mark right under pin. Absolutely scarce British designer and vintage fashion collector jewelry piece and one of the rare Kutchinsky brooches and jewels. The Kutchinksy business was established in the 1890s when Joseph Kutchinsky's grandfather fled Poland, bringing his family to England, where he set up a jewelry manufacturing company in the East End of London. They brought with them centuries of experience in the jewelry trade where they had been jewelers to the court of Ludwig of Bavaria. Kutchinsky was a natural salesman and thrived in the colorful commercial environment that was the pre-war East End. Kutchinsky pioneered the use of platinum in fine jewelry and the jewellers shop in Commercial Road soon became a mecca for lovers of fine jewelry. Joseph had inexhaustable energy and charismatic charm. His customers liked and trusted him, his employees admired and respected him, and his family loved and revered him. Roger and Paul Kutchinsky both joined the family business as soon as they had completed their education and training. The business went from strength to strength, specializing in pieces of the highest quality designed to appeal to London's booming export market. Kutchinsky jewelry found its way into the homes of the rich and famous all over the world, particularly in the newly prosperous Middle East. Kutchinsky was deemed “London’s David Webb” for his stylish designs. Like Webb, Kutchinsky sometimes integrated animals and animal into his pieces, injecting a sense of whimsy and artistry into the jewelry world.
