Item description: * See scan – absolutely perfect condition. This is an extremely scarce and rare Prince Ferdinand's era Royal Bulgaria / Bulgarian NAVY and Marine officer’s epee sword / épée. The blade of the sword is triple edged and fully etched and engraved with wave patterns. The hilt is masterly decorated with high relief floral decorations, as well as with a large anchor at the middle of the guard and a head of Neptune at another part of the hilt. The grip is made out of dark bone or tusk intricately braided with brass wire. The scabbard is leather with brass parts again engraved with floral motifs. The hilt is also engraved with name of the officer who received this presentation sword – LIEUT. MINKOV D. NAVY Lieutenant and ship Captain Minkov was a Bulgarian officer who later during WWI heroically died while disarming enemy mines in the Black Sea. There is also a street in the Bulgarian town of Varna named after him.
The sword is 920 mm long and blade is 790 mm in length. The whole epee had been masterly cleaned and tightened up and all parts covered with protective shine. Real museum quality piece and so far there are known no more than 3 such pieces in collections worldwide. The reason this type of antique Bulgarian NAVY sword is so rare is because during 1904-1905 Bulgarian NAVY was headed by a French Commander Pichon who managed to purchase the first Bulgarian Danube fleet ships and Black See fleet ships from France and only a small part of the newly established Bulgarian fleet and officers received this somewhat French type of NAVY epee swords.
Absolutely scarce military / militaria collector piece and one of the rarest Bulgarian NAVY / Marine related Royal swords, epees and edged weapons.
